Would you or someone you know like to serve as a page for the legislature?

Would you or your child or grandchild like to serve as a page for the West Virginia Legislature? This learning experience is open to students ages 10 to 18 during the 60-day legislative session which for the 2000 session will begin on January 12 and conclude March 12, 2000. Each day's legislative session normally starts at 11:00 a.m. During the first 30 days the session may only last for 30 minutes. During the last 30 days when more legislation has worked its way through the process, the floor session may last one or two hours or longer.

Each day before the legislative session begins, the Page Director, Mrs. Melinda Ryan Swagger, will provide a 45 to 60 minute training session to walk the pages through the process so they know where copies of bills can be found, where coffee is located and other requests that legislators may have. Delegate Overington has also been successful in many cases of arranging a visit and photo with the Governor.

If you or someone you know would like to participate, contact Delegate Overington with the student's and parent's name, address and phone number as well as the school and grade.

These students have already made their plans to serve as pages in early 2000:

  • Peter Allphin, Hedgesville Middle School
  • Shane Ranck, Hedgesville Middle School
